Electric Vehicle Driving-Sound Design

Since I wrote my Bachelor’s thesis about designing sound for electric vehicles I wanted to have an environment to test interior driving sounds (and also sound for in-game vehicles).

The Automotive Sound Lab is built with Unreal Engine and MaxMSP and uses Audiokinetic Wwise as Audio Middleware. Unreal is used as a simulation with a virtual car, which receives input from a gaming wheel and pedal.

For real world testing, powertrain signals are sent from the electric car to an CAN-Bus to USB Adapter, which is controlled with Python. Python sends the signals via OSC to MaxMSP which is smoothing and processing the data for “sound use”.

I use Reaper to create sample based sounddesigns which I then import into Wwise. Then I map audio behaviour according to the real time parameters from the powertrain.

Also a procedural approach with MaxMSP is possible. In this case Max is used as audio engine and Wwise is bypassed.
